Pravini's happy face keeps Melbourne moving

The iconic MCG hasn't seen any AFL games or big events since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Without fans filing in, Pravini Fernando, who worked in hospitality at the ground, was sadly stood down months ago along with many others.

"It was a stressful period," Pravini says.

"We had bills to pay and rent was coming in. We didn't have much access to grants either."

Thankfully, Pravini received a new opportunity through Spotless – which is part of the Downer Group – to help keep Melbourne's tram network clean during the pandemic.

Made possible through the Working for Victoria fund, Yarra Trams has been able to hire almost 300 contractors to clean stops, depots and light vehicles to keep employees and the public safe.

Starting just a few weeks ago, Pravini has already been out on the network as well as at Kew Depot, helping keep the common areas clean.

"It's definitely a different environment, but there's been lots of positive feedback from the team," she says.

"I'm working with an amazing team at Yarra Trams, which has made this experience really enjoyable."

The pride in her new role cannot go unnoticed when Pravini speaks about what she's doing.

"We see school kids going to school and people going to work, and they have to feel safe taking public transport again," she says.

"This initiative gave us an opportunity to get back on our feet and start the day with a happy face."
